JSW Steel Limited signed a development agreement with the West Bengal Government in January 2007. This agreement brought to JSW Steel Limited, a new partner in Government of West Bengal. Through this agreement the Government of West Bengal has agreed to partner JSW in facilitating to build a 10 million tones per annum (mtpa) modern steel plant at Salboni, West Medinipur District. The project is being implemented in phases. The Environment clearance for the project has been obtained.
Coal:
The West Bengal Mineral Development and Trading Corporation Limited shall supply Coal to JSW Bengal Steel Limited.
Water:
The Government of West Bengal has allocated water required for the project.
Land:
A path breaking rehabilitation initiative involving about 741 families has raised the bar for various industrial projects throughout the country while obtaining a positive response from all over.
The salient features of the compensation package being:
- Directly negotiated basic compensation for the land.
- Employment for one person per family after basic training.
- Free JSW Bengal Steel Shares to be allotted equivalent to the land valuation, to be kept under the Trusteeship of DM, locked-in-till commencement of commercial production.
A member from each family will be provided technical training, the expenses of which will be provided by JSW entirely, after which jobs within the project would be provided.
About 4500 acres of land has been acquired.
