India’s Northeast has long been celebrated for its vibrant cultural identity, yet its artistic legacy has often remained underrepresented on national platforms. Assam, home to centuries of textile mastery, oral traditions, storytelling, classical dance, temple architecture and living cultural traditions, is now preparing for one of its most transformative cultural developments.
A landmark Heritage Museum in Guwahati is set to elevate the state’s artistic and historical significance to a global level. Backed by the JSW Group, this upcoming institution marks a major commitment to preserving the art and culture of Assam while giving future generations a world-class space to connect with their roots.
This project stands at the intersection of heritage, innovation and community-building, signaling a new chapter for the cultural future of Assam.

A Defining Moment for Assam’s Cultural Identity
The Heritage Museum in Guwahati will serve as a national hub for research, exhibition, and public engagement. To be established by the JSW Group, the museum will be a 45,000 sq. ft facility designed to be “a landmark space for the documentation, preservation and celebration of Assamese heritage.” It will bring Assam’s artistic legacy into a space that merges tradition with world-class museum design.
As Assam’s younger generations navigate rapid economic and technological change, this project ensures that Assamese culture and traditions remain accessible, inspiring and deeply relevant.
From Tradition to Tomorrow
Rooted in the cultural heritage of Assam, the Guwahati museum will bring together historic artefacts and contemporary expressions. A key highlight will be exhibitions aligned with the 17-century Vrindavani Vastra, representing the artistic and spiritual depth of Assamese textile traditions. Beyond individual artefacts, the space will comprehensively present the art and culture of Assam through immersive storytelling and design.
The museum will include advanced climate control and security systems to ensure the preservation of artefacts. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the most prominent cultural centres in the Northeast, connecting Assam’s heritage with the world.
A Living Expression of Assamese Art
Designed as more than a static archive, the heritage museum in Guwahati will function as a dynamic cultural space. It will showcase Assamese art as a living tradition shaped by history and contemporary creativity. Through curated displays and cultural programming, the Guwahati museum will highlight Assam culture and traditions while encouraging cross-cultural exchange.
This approach positions the Guwahati museum as a leader among museums in Assam and reinforces its role in celebrating the cultural heritage of Assam.
Leadership and Cultural Vision
The upcoming museum, to be developed as per a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2025 between the JSW Group and the Government of Assam, will be an advanced space designed to bring the cultural heritage of Assam to life.
During the MoU signing with the JSW Group, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the project as a moment of pride for the state. “The museum will not only bring the sacred Vrindavani Vastra home but also provide a world-class facility to showcase Assamese art, history, and heritage alongside global cultural exhibits,” he said.
Mrs. Sangita Jindal, Chairperson of the JSW Foundation, reiterated the JSW Group’s commitment to supporting India’s cultural legacy and strengthening the art and culture of Assam. The project reflects collaboration between the JSW Group, the Assam Government, historians, conservation experts, and architect Abin Chaudhuri, ensuring global standards in design and preservation.
The museum is certain to set new benchmarks for future museums in Assam.
Transforming Assam Tourism and Heritage Travel
With its scale, architecture and cultural depth, the project is expected to significantly boost Assam tourism.
Industry reports highlight that Guwahati, already home to several heritage sites in Assam, will position the museum as one of the best places to visit in Guwahati for cultural travellers.
The museum will preserve and promote art, culture, and heritage. It will feature national and international artefacts, cultural showcases and travelling exhibitions, fostering global cultural exchange.
It is poised to become a new anchor for heritage tourism in Assam, drawing visitors from India and abroad.
Raising the Bar for Museums in Assam
The JSW Group aims to establish a benchmark institution with climate-controlled galleries, research facilities, digitised archives, and international-grade exhibition design. These features place the heritage museum in Guwahati among the most advanced Indian heritage museums, elevating how the art and culture of Assam are preserved and presented.
A Cultural Investment for the Future
More than an architectural landmark, theHeritage Museum in Guwahati represents a long-term commitment to Assam heritage. Supported by the JSW Group, the project will preserve rare collections, empower artisans, and strengthen the cultural heritage of Assam. By integrating education, conservation, and tourism, the museum will play a defining role in shaping Assam’s cultural future and amplifying the art and culture of Assam on the global stage.
