Sustainable manufacturing is at the core of our operations at JSW Steel, Energy, Cement, and Paint

Sustainable manufacturing is at the core of our operations at JSW Steel, Energy, Cement, and Paint

At JSW, our identity is forged in steel, cement, and energy—the very building blocks of a modern nation. For decades, we have seen our purpose as being a dedicated partner in India's incredible growth story, supplying the foundational materials for the vital infrastructure that empowers our communities and fuels our economy. Yet, we have always understood that this role comes with a profound responsibility. True nation-building cannot come at the expense of the planet we all share.

This belief has led us to a powerful, unifying principle: sustainable manufacturing. For many, this might seem like a recent trend, but at JSW, it is a core philosophy embedded in our operational ethos. We always focus on achieving more value with less energy, greater strength with fewer materials, and better growth with a smaller environmental footprint.

This commitment is not an isolated initiative; rather, it lies at the core of our enterprise-wide sustainability strategy, shaping operational priorities and capital allocation decisions across all our business units—from JSW Steel and JSW Cement to JSW Energy and JSW Paints.

Rather than functioning as a standalone programme, sustainability at JSW is embedded within manufacturing processes, technology adoption, resource efficiency, and governance systems. This cross-business alignment ensures that decarbonisation, circularity, and responsible growth are implemented consistently across the Group’s diversified industrial portfolio.

JSW Energy: Contribution to Sustainable Manufacturing

JSW Energy: Contribution to Sustainable Manufacturing

The foundation of green manufacturing is clean power. JSW Energy is leading this charge, spearheading India's transition to a low-carbon future by providing clean energy solutions.

JSW Energy’s strategy focuses on expanding renewable energy capacity while maintaining a balanced generation mix that ensures reliability and energy security. This dual approach supports India’s growing electricity demand while progressively increasing the share of cleaner energy sources within our portfolio.

With a diversified portfolio, which spans thermal, hydro, wind, and solar assets, JSW Energy is striding towards its long-term vision of becoming a 30 GW power-generating company by FY2030, alongside a target of 40 GWh of energy storage capacity. This growth is designed to progressively increase the share of renewables within the portfolio while strengthening grid stability through storage solutions.

The Company has also commissioned India's largest green hydrogen plant, with a capacity of 3,800 tonnes per annum, near JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar Works. The facility now supplies Vijayanagar Works with clean hydrogen for its direct reduced iron operations, marking a significant milestone in the commercialisation of this technology and the decarbonisation of the Group’s manufacturing processes. Its acquisitions of 02 Power and KSK have been fully integrated and are now contributing meaningfully to earnings.

JSW Energy remains firmly committed to its 2030 goals of 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of storage.

Together, these initiatives reinforce JSW Energy’s commitment to supporting the Group’s integrated decarbonisation strategy, while advancing towards its long-term Net Zero ambition by 2050. This commitment creates a powerful synergy within the JSW Group.

JSW Steel: Smarter Steelmaking for a Cleaner Future

Steel is the backbone of modern life, but its traditional production has a heavy carbon footprint, relying on coal to remove oxygen from iron ore and releasing significant carbon dioxide (CO2) in the process.

We are aggressively moving towards cleaner technologies.

  • One key strategy is using the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) method, which acts like a giant recycling machine. Instead of starting with virgin ore, the EAF melts down scrap steel—obtained from old cars, appliances, and construction materials—to give it new life.

This approach holds the potential to cut emissions to less than a third of the Integrated Blast Furnace-Basic Oxygen Furnace (BF-BOF) route.

  • Beyond process innovation, JSW Steel is also expanding its portfolio of low-carbon products. It recently launched GreenEdge, a certificate-based, low-emission offering built on worldsteel’s ‘Book & Claim’ approach and Chain of Custody guidelines. GreenEdge enables customers to make credible, verified Scope 3 emissions reduction claims.

JSW Steel’s sustainability leadership has been externally validated. In 2025, the company secured the highest S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) score of 88 in the global steel sector, reinforcing its commitment to transparent ESG disclosure, governance excellence, and long-term value creation. This recognition places JSW Steel among the most sustainability-driven steel producers globally and reflects the structural integration of environmental and social priorities into business strategy.

Together, these initiatives signal a shift from incremental improvement to systemic transformation — positioning JSW Steel not only as a scale leader, but as a technology and sustainability frontrunner in the evolving global steel landscape.

JSW Cement: The Genius of Green Cement

Cement production also has a significant environmental legacy, primarily from making “clinker,” its key binding agent in Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). This involves heating limestone to very high temperatures, a process that releases large amounts of CO2.

Our solution at JSW Cement is a powerful example of "industrial symbiosis," where one industry's waste becomes another's resource:

  • We utilise Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS), a co-product from our steel manufacturing, to replace a large portion of the clinker in our blended cement. This transforms a waste product into a valuable raw material, creating a circular system where the outputs of one process become the inputs for another.

The environmental benefits of this green cement production are staggering:

  • For every tonne of our slag-based "Green Cement," we save approximately 0.85 tonnes of CO2 and use nearly 90% less energy compared to traditional cement.

This innovation gives JSW Cement one of the lowest carbon footprints in the industry, serving as a testament to the power of circular thinking.

Beyond manufacturing, JSW Cement is also working to reduce emissions across its logistics network. The company has initiated EV truck trials that are projected to reduce transport-related emissions by up to 40%, supporting the decarbonisation of supply-chain operations while accelerating the adoption of cleaner transportation solutions.

JSW Paints: A Commitment to Eco-Friendly Products

At JSW Paints, we have built our business around the idea that beauty and responsibility should go hand-in-hand. This begins with a thoughtful approach to product formulation and extends through our entire manufacturing and packaging process. Our water-based paints have low VOCs:

  • Solvent-based paints release high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Water-based JSW Paints significantly reduce harmful emissions that can impact both human health and the environment, making them family-friendly and better for indoor air quality.
  • Our manufacturing plants are designed as Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facilities, meaning all industrial wastewater is treated and reused, preventing any discharge into the environment.

This thoughtful approach extends to our packaging:

  • JSW Paints have fully recyclable and ergonomically designed packaging to be space-efficient. This innovation reduces transportation costs and the associated carbon footprint.

Our commitment to creating verifiably green products is recognised by leading authorities; our "Profect" range is certified by GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) and is compliant with LEED VOC criteria, making our products a trusted choice for green buildings.

Efficiency in Motion and Design: A Circular Future

At JSW, circularity is not an abstract sustainability concept, it is embedded within the way our businesses interact and create value. We continuously seek opportunities to reduce waste, extend resource life cycles, and maximise the utility of materials across our industrial ecosystem.

Steel is inherently circular, capable of being recycled repeatedly without significant loss of structural properties. This characteristic enables steel to remain in productive use for decades while reducing the need for virgin raw materials.

Circularity extends beyond recycling. Across the Group, steelmaking byproducts are utilised in blended cement production, where Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) serves as a valuable substitute for clinker. This industrial symbiosis transforms what would otherwise be waste into a resource, reducing embodied carbon while improving resource efficiency.

The same philosophy influences our approach at JSW Paints, where water-based formulations, recyclable packaging, and responsible manufacturing practices help minimise environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle.

By integrating circular economy principles across materials, manufacturing processes, and product design, JSW is moving beyond the traditional "take-make-dispose" model and building a more resource-efficient industrial future.

A Legacy of Sustainable Growth

At JSW, our journey towards sustainability is built on a simple yet powerful idea: that sustainable manufacturing is the most effective path to a greener future. Our innovations are not isolated efforts but interconnected gears in a single, powerful engine.

Clean energy solutions from JSW Energy support lower-emission manufacturing across the Group, while byproducts from steelmaking are utilised as inputs in JSW Cement’s blended cement production — reinforcing circularity within the industrial ecosystem.

This is not a journey of words, but of action, backed by firm commitments and substantial investment. We are not waiting for the future to arrive; we are actively building it, guided by our core philosophy of being "Better Everyday."
