Aerospace Manufacturing and Defence: JSW Group’s Dual Contribution

10 June, 2026

India’s defence and aerospace sectors are transforming rapidly, driven by homegrown technology, self-reliance, and stronger industrial capabilities. As national security priorities evolve and the nation advances toward“Atmanirbhar Bharat”, the demand for advanced materials, specialised manufacturing, and integrated infrastructure is rising.

These sectors now require companies that can deliver not only scale, but strategic responsibility. The JSW Group, with its strong industrial legacy in steel, energy, and infrastructure, is emerging as an enabler in this critical national mission, contributing to defence and aerospace manufacturing in India

JSW Group’s Role in India’s Defence Manufacturing Industry

JSW Group’s Role in India’s Defence Manufacturing Industry

JSW Group has entered defence manufacturing with a clear purpose. The aim is to empower India’s armed forces with indigenous strength. Through JSW Defence, the Group supports the Indian defence sector by developing specialist mobility systems and strengthening indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. This effort is complemented by JSW Steel's supply of high-performance steel solutions and the Group's broader industrial infrastructure capabilities for mission-critical applications.

The company focuses on manufacturing advanced solutions for the Indian Armed Forces while helping India achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in defence exports. By building strong partnerships and collaborating with global players, it aims to make India a major centre for defence manufacturing.

A key example is the production of Specialist Mobility Vehicles (SMVs) through JSW’s collaboration with Gecko Motors. These vehicles are engineered for high-performance military use, supporting troop movement and logistics across complex terrains. This marks a significant step in reducing dependency on imported defence vehicles and technologies.

The JSW-Gecko ATOR N1200 is one of the most striking examples of how India is moving toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. Built to tackle some of the toughest terrains and operational challenges, this specialist mobility vehicle shows how entrepreneurial vision, smart corporate moves, and indigenous innovation can come together to create world-class defence technology.

What started as a startup dream has now turned into a reality with the ATOR N1200 already serving the Indian Army in high-altitude zones, border patrol duties, and even disaster relief. With 96 vehicles delivered to Indian Army within 6 months the project proves not only India's growing capability but also the success of the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

JSW’s approach is nation-first: contribute industrial capability to national defence while ensuring reliability, safety, and long-term technological development.

JSW’s Expertise in Aerospace Manufacturing in India

JSW’s Expertise in Aerospace Manufacturing in India

India’s aerospace sector demands precision materials, lightweight alloys, and components capable of withstanding extreme conditions. JSW is preparing to meet aerospace requirements by developing strong, lightweight materials like aviation-grade steel, aluminium, and future composite metals.

JSW Group’s contributions lie in enabling aerospace manufacturing through:

  • High-strength steel for ground support and hangar structures
  • Development of specialised materials suitable for aircraft chassis and support equipment

JSW is working to meet Indian aerospace industry needs by creating strong and lightweight materials such as aviation-grade steel, aluminium, and next-generation composites.

JSW Defence’s foray into the Aerospace and Defence sector by partnering with Shield AI (US) to indigenously manufacture the V-BAT, a cutting-edge Group 3 tail-sitter VTOL Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Additionally, the company has partnered with Tomcar to manufacture specialized, high-mobility tactical off-road vehicles tailored for demanding defense applications.

The Synergy Between JSW Steel and Defence Manufacturing

JSW Steel plays a critical role in enabling defence and infrastructure applications through its portfolio of high-strength and specialised steel products. JSW Steel produces advanced grades of steel used in infrastructure, heavy engineering, and strategic sectors that require high strength, durability, and performance under demanding conditions. These capabilities make its steel suitable for applications such as structural systems, mobility platforms, and other critical use cases aligned with defence and industrial requirements.

JSW’s steel solutions are designed to meet stringent standards of strength, impact resistance, and corrosion protection, key requirements for applications in defence and related sectors. JSW’s steel is designed to meet strict standards of strength, impact resistance, and protection against corrosion, qualities essential for defence and aerospace applications.

At the same time, JSW’s focus on green manufacturing ensures that national security is built responsibly, with sustainability at its core.

Supporting India’s Armed Forces

Supporting India’s Armed Forces

JSW Group has made a decisive entry into defence manufacturing in India with a clear national objective, which is to build indigenous capability, reduce import dependency, and support the operational readiness of India’s armed forces.

Through JSW Defence, the Group is strengthening the Indian defence sector with advanced vehicles, unmanned systems, and specialised materials.

The key contributions by JSW Defence are:

  • Indigenous Specialist Mobility Vehicles (SMVs): JSW Gecko Motors, in collaboration with Copato UK, has developed the ATOR N1200, an advanced amphibious all-terrain vehicle designed for deployment in deserts, marshlands, and extreme terrains. Its ability to operate in harsh weather makes it ideal for the Indian Army’s frontline units.
  • Manufacturing Hub for Military Vehicles: The ATOR N1200 represents India's ambition to become a global manufacturing base for military mobility platforms, positioning JSW Defence as a strategic contributor to modern defence manufacturing in India.
  • Strategic Partnership with Shield AI (USA) and V-BAT Manufacturing Initiative: JSW has partnered with Shield AI to indigenise and manufacture the V-BAT Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), a cutting-edge Group 3 tail-sitter VTOL drone currently deployed by international armed forces. Marking JSW's entry into the Indian aerospace sector, the initiative is supported by an investment of nearly USD 90 million to establish a domestic facility for the assembly, testing, and large-scale production of V-BAT aircraft. This investment will strengthen India's self-reliance in advanced defence technologies while positioning the country as a potential global manufacturing and export hub for unmanned combat systems.
  • Nation-First Vision & Atmanirbhar Bharat Alignment: JSW’s approach to defence is rooted in national responsibility, building capability in mobility systems, armour steel, and aerospace technology that strengthens India’s long-term strategic independence.

With these initiatives, JSW is not merely supplying defence products, it is building a future-ready industrial base for India’s security and sovereignty.

JSW Group’s Impact on Strengthening India’s Defence and Aerospace Capabilities

JSW Group’s combined presence across steel, energy, infrastructure, and defence helps strengthen India’s strategic autonomy.

Important Contributions to National Capability:
