Innovation for Sustainable Construction

JSW Group of companies continue their research & development activities in order to improve productivity and efficiency, enriching the product portfolio and preparing for future opportunities. Additionally, it also develops and introduces products & solutions that contribute to sustainable construction.

Cement

Portland Slag Cement (PSC) is a blended cement confirming to IS 455:2015. It is most suitable for residential, commercial and industrial projects. At JSW Cement, superior quality slag produced at the steel-manufacturing plants is used along with clinker and gypsum to create PSC, using state-of-the-art technology, through roller press and vertical roller mill. Using blast furnace slag instead of clinker helps avoid the generation of GHG emissions related to energy consumption in equivalent clinker making. Therefore, PSC is recognised as a green product.

Some of the advantages of PSC are longer life, resistance to chemical attack, better surface for painting, less heat of hydration & reduced thermal crack and incomparable long-term strength.

The application areas of PSC include pile construction works, concrete roads and flyovers, water retaining structures, dams, marine works. Also, the PSC based concrete always shows higher strengths beyond 28 days in comparison to those made with OPC concrete and fly ash concrete.

Paint

We have now ventured into the Paint industry to colour the nation with JSW Paints. JSW being a responsible corporate has chosen to produce the complete range of JSW paints in water-based paints category. Not only the paint offered is green but also the packaging designed for JSW Paints is recyclable and innovative to resolve the issue related to transportation, thereby saving up on CO2 emissions.

Paints are either oil-based that use an organic solvent, typically a mineral turpentine, in the makeup of the paint or, they are water-based with water as its solvent. Water-based paints have an edge over oil-based as they have low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC). VOCs are organic solvent made up of petrochemicals and plants and are released in the form of vapours and gases as the paint dries up. This vapour has a strong odour, is flammable and can have a harmful effect on the environment as well as human health. High exposure to these VOCs can cause headaches, skin irritation and nausea for some people. As water-based paints feature solvents that are primarily made up of water, they release much fewer VOCs into the air and are therefore considered better for the environment and people’s health. Water-based paints also offer more durability than oil-based paints which become inflexible after drying and are more likely to crack, become dry, brittle and chalky over time. The flexibility in water-based paints means that they are able to expand and contract with weather conditions, making them less susceptible to cracking.
