Sakshi leads India’s charge at Asian Championships

Vinesh Phogat Among Six JSW-Supported Wrestlers In Indian Squad As Competition Begins On May 10

Delhi: Wrestler Sakshi Malik will lead India’s charge at the upcoming Asian Championships to be held at the KD Jadhav Stadium, in Delhi, commencing on Wednesday. The event will see as many as 6 JSW Sports-supported wrestlers take the mat in a bid for continental glory.

India will be fielding a 24-member squad across three categories, namely freestyle men, freestyle women and Greco-Roman. In a tournament that will see top wrestlers from across Asia participate, the Indian contingent will look to assert dominance as the host nation, in the event that is set to take place between the 10th and 14th of May.

Leading the Indian charge will be Olympic Bronze medalist Sakshi while Vinesh Phogat makes a return (55 kg freestyle) to competitive wrestling after an injury cruelly cut short her Olympic dream. Also part of the Indian contingent will be Sandeep Tomar (57kg freestyle) and Satyawart Kadian (97kg freestyle). Ravinder Singh and Hardeep Singh will be competing in the Greco Roman category.

“This is the first international tournament I will be competing in after the Olympics and I am confident of my training and preparation while coming into this event. Participating at the championships is also going to be an experience that I look forward to and I know I am carrying the expectations of many post the medal at Rio. I know I am going to be giving this my best and I look forward to aiming for another medal, this time at home."

The wrestlers will take to the mat on the 10th with qualification rounds being the first order of business.
