JSW Platina can help reduce carbon footprint

The first steel company to introduce continuous annealing technology for making tinplate.

JSW Platina: Transforming the Packaging Industry;

Steel was introduced to the packaging world around 200 years ago. Today, in this era of sustainability, steel has emerged as one of the most vital materials for food and non-food packaging. Being malleable, durable and strong, the unique properties of steel have contributed to its rise as the premier packaging material.

In the 1800s, steel’s phenomenal preservative properties caused a massive overhaul in the food manufacturing industry. Steel cans came into existence, completely transforming the food packaging industry. Subsequently, steel’s competence as a packaging material received a boost as transportation systems started to advance. It remains so till date.

Steel offers high strength and heat resistance, enhancing its protective properties. With the increasing demand for steel as a packaging material, manufacturers are keen on formulating light-weight versions of steel without compromising its strength. These processes primarily include retreatment of the tinplate.

JSW Platina: The Future of Sustainable Packaging

With single-use plastic, that mostly comes from the current food packaging industry, taking a toll on the environment and threatening the very existence of humankind, there is a growing need to produce packaging materials that are high on the sustainability graph. With the introduction of JSW Platina, a high quality tinplate packaging material, JSW Steel has taken a remarkable stride towards furthering its ventures in sustainable steel manufacturing.

With India’s pledge to eradicate the usage of single-use plastic products by 2022, JSW Steel has come forward with its advanced continuous annealing technology to produce sustainable tinplate products. JSW Platina’s competency as a ‘green’ packaging material is targeted at reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging industry.

JSW Platina leverages tinplate - a thin steel plate tin coating on both surfaces. With properties like high strength, durability and corrosion resistance, tinplate has a smooth surface that can be easily welded or printed. Moreover, it is lightweight and has the necessary aesthetic luster desired for attractive packaging. Its low cost and wide availability add to its value for the packaging industry.

Applications of JSW Platina

JSW Platina is available in Tinplate or Tin Free Steel (TFS) with Single Reduced and Double Reduced variants. It has a wide range of applications across the packaging industry, including food cans, coffee cans, aerosol cans, crown corks, battery cans to name a few. The double reduced variants are comparatively stronger and glossier than the single reduced products.

To determine the application of a JSW Platina product, the hardness level of the base material is considered. At JSW Steel, globally accepted procedures like annealing and temper rolling mill are leveraged to further advance the packaging process.

With benefits like long shelf life, dust- and moisture-resistance, UV ray and bacterial protection, aroma retention, flavor retention, damage protection, sustainability and printable surface, JSW Platina is undoubtedly the packaging material of the future.

Technological innovation has significantly transformed the way steel was previously perceived in the packaging sector and otherwise. With products like JSW Platina, JSW Steel, has taken an important step towards contributing to a greener future of packaging and supporting the industry in various innovative ways.
