JSW Steel’s Salem Works Wins Prestigious Deming Prize 2019

JSW Steel’s Salem Works, India’s largest Special Alloy Steel Plant (Long products), has won the highly coveted Deming Prize for 2019. The results were announced by Deming Secretariat in October, 2019. Mr. BNS Prakash Rao, Plant Head of JSW Salem works, received the award earlier this year during Deming Award Ceremony in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Prakash Rao was joined by his teammates Mr. Murali, Head of Operations; Mr. Pankaj Lochan, Head of Corporate TQM and R&D; and Mr. Sai Rama Krishna, Head of Business Excellence, at the award ceremony.

Sponsored by the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), the Deming Prize is awarded every year to recognize individuals and organizations for their commendable contributions to the field of Total Quality Management (TQM) and businesses that have successfully implemented TQM. This prize was established in honour of Dr. W. E. Deming who contributed greatly to Japan’s proliferation of Statistical Quality Control after World War II. Today, it is the highest award on Quality Management in the world, equivalent to the Nobel Prize in the field of quality.;

Several companies around the world vie for the award, but only few succeed. And those who do, command respect. JSW Salem Works, which commenced practising TQM from 2014, completed the diagnosis during FY18 and successfully challenged for Deming Prize in FY20.

The award is a testimony towards JSW Salem’s Total Employee Involvement initiatives, Process and Systems improvements in meeting the customers intended needs, apart from a collaborative approach with all the stakeholders. Winning the Deming Prize is a great inspiration to all employees at JSW Steel to continue aiming for and achieving excellence every day.
