Steel, with its infinite recyclability, stands as one of the most sustainable materials on the planet. At JSW Steel, this inherent property of steel lies at the heart of our commitment to a more sustainable future. By embracing innovation, digital transformation and responsible practices, we are redefining what it means to manufacture steel in the 21st century—prioritising environmental stewardship, community empowerment, and climate resilience.
JSW Steel is at the forefront of green steelmaking in India. Through constant innovation, we have built robust capabilities that allow us to optimise energy usage, enhance safety and strengthen our decision-making with digital tools. Our goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050—a target that places us two decades ahead of India’s national pledge for 2070.
To this end, we have committed an investment of USD 1 billion towards decarbonisation and have issued sustainability-linked bonds worth USD 500 million, reinforcing our belief that financial performance and environmental responsibility must go hand-in-hand.
JSW Steel’s sustainability efforts are anchored in eight key pillars, each addressing a critical challenge facing the industry and the planet:
Our climate strategy is built around reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations, including indirect (Scope 3) emissions. We are incorporating low-carbon technologies, improving efficiency, and aligning our practices with global climate goals to build a more resilient future.
We are actively transitioning to renewable energy, with 600 MW of hybrid capacity planned by FY 2026–27. At the same time, our process innovations—such as improving LD gas recovery and steam efficiency—are reducing overall energy consumption and cutting CO₂ emissions.
Water security is a growing concern across India, and our operations have adopted cutting-edge techniques to conserve, recycle, and reuse water. The Vijayanagar plant, for example, reuses treated sewage, prevents leakages, and employs advanced reverse osmosis systems to maximise efficiency.
Air pollution control is a top priority at our facilities. We utilise advanced technologies like MEROS for emissions control and are enhancing covered storage to mitigate fugitive emissions, especially at our Dolvi unit. These efforts ensure healthier work environments and cleaner air for surrounding communities.
We take a strategic approach to biodiversity, assessing ecological risks and working with local communities to restore habitats. Our mangrove conservation project near Dolvi, for instance, not only restores native flora but also protects farmland from salt-water intrusion.
In line with the principles of a circular economy, we have implemented large-scale waste reuse initiatives. Our steel slag is repurposed into construction materials such as road surfaces and paver blocks. With rigorous testing and innovation, we aim to reduce dependence on natural aggregates and lower our environmental footprint.
As part of our Zero Liquid Discharge commitment, all wastewater is treated on-site using modern sewage treatment plants. This initiative replaces approximately 50,000 litres of fresh water per day with treated water, preserving natural water sources and reducing pollution.
Resource constraints demand smarter solutions. At our Salem plant, we are blending locally sourced biomass with coal, significantly cutting down fossil fuel usage. These innovations reflect our broader mission to do more with less—efficiently and responsibly.
JSW Steel is not only transforming how steel is made, but also what it is used for. Our innovations extend into product development, with a focus on creating materials that support sustainability across industries.
JSW Platina, India’s first continuous-annealed tinplate, is a pioneering solution in sustainable packaging. By providing an alternative to plastic, it supports national goals to reduce single-use plastics.
Our Neosteel TMT bars, roofing sheets, and automotive-grade steel have received GreenPro certification, making them India’s first products in their respective categories to carry an eco-label. These products empower industries—particularly automotive and construction—to lower their environmental impact while maintaining performance.
Sustainability for us goes beyond the environment. Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives have impacted over one million lives across education, healthcare, rural development, and livelihood enhancement. With substantial financial commitments towards these programmes, JSW Steel continues to uplift communities and build resilience at the grassroots level.
As India pursues its vision of becoming a global manufacturing leader, sustainability must remain central to industrial growth. JSW Steel is proud to lead this transformation—proving that strength and sustainability can go hand-in-hand. Through innovation, investment, and unwavering resolve, we are forging a future where progress doesn’t come at the planet’s expense.
