From Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir to the icy heights of Siachen, JSW’s Nation First ethos and Better Everyday promise continue to live on in action

At JSW, we believe that true progress begins with putting the nation first. For us, growth has meaning only when it uplifts communities, strengthens resilience, and safeguards lives. This belief is lived every day through our 5C values—Commitment, Courage, Agility, Collaboration, and Compassion—values that are not just words on paper, but guiding principles that shape our response in the most testing moments.

When natural disasters strike, they test both people and institutions. The recent floods in Punjab and the devastating cloudburst in the remote Kishtwar region of Jammu & Kashmir were stark reminders of the urgent need for swift, dependable rescue operations. And in these critical hours, JSW Defence stood up with its indigenously assembled ATOR N1200 Specialist Mobility Vehicle (SMV), the Kapidhwaj, bringing the 5Cs to life on the ground.

Living the 5Cs in Action

  • Commitment: Staying on ground tirelessly, our team of 10 JSW members and 4 SMVs worked round the clock with authorities in Punjab’s flood-hit areas of Ramdas, Amritsar, and Sultanpur Lodhi, to rescue 244 stranded people and deliver essentials like food and medicine.
  • Courage: In Kishtwar’s Chisoti village, 2 Kapidhwaj vehicles braved boulder-strewn and unstable terrain facilitating rescue efforts by helping officials reach inaccessible areas.
  • Agility: Whether it was Punjab’s submerged roads or Kishtwar’s crumbling mountain paths, the Kapidhwaj’s engineering ensured missions continued without interruption.
  • Collaboration: JSW Defence worked hand in hand with the Indian Army, NDRF, and SDRF, creating a united front that magnified the reach and impact of relief operations.
  • Compassion: Above all, every mission was anchored in empathy, rescuing people, saving lives, and delivering essentials to communities in distress.

From Siachen to Floodplains

This isn’t the first time the Kapidhwaj has proven its mettle. Earlier in January 2025, it was deployed by the Northern Command of the Indian Army at the Siachen Glacier—the world’s highest and most unforgiving battlefield. There, the vehicle enabled a high-stakes casualty evacuation, proving it could endure snow-covered, rocky, and glaciated terrains with reliability and strength. From the heights of Siachen to the floodplains of Punjab, the Kapidhwaj has shown itself to be a true guardian in extreme conditions.

The Strength Behind the Machine

What makes the Kapidhwaj (ATOR N1200), manufactured by JSW Gecko Motors, a subsidiary of JSW Defence, more than just another vehicle is its adaptability to India’s toughest terrains and its ability to perform under pressure.

  • Extreme Terrain Ready: Equally effective in snow, water, marshes, forests, rocks, and floodplains.
  • Performance: 40 km/h on land and 6 km/h on water.
  • Capacity: Carries 8 passengers, 1200 kg payload, and tows 2350 kg.
  • Durability: Operates seamlessly from -40°C to +40°C.
  • Design: Powered by a 1.5L, 3-cylinder engine delivering 55 hp and 190 Nm torque.
  • Endurance: 232L fuel storage for long, uninterrupted missions.

Unveiled at the 2025 Republic Day Parade, the Kapidhwaj is an Indianised version of the SHERP N1200, originally developed by Ukraine’s Quadro International and UK-based Copato Ltd. Its assembly in India, through a collaboration between Copato, JSW Defence, and JSW Gecko Motors, reflects JSW’s belief in self-reliance, innovation, and national service.

Nation First, Always

At JSW, “Better Everyday” is a promise we live by every day though every action. It is a promise to innovate with purpose, act with compassion, and stand by the nation when it needs us most. Because for us, putting the nation first isn’t an act of choice. It is who we are. It is what we do.
