Not fluent beyond a few words in Tamil, S. Dhanalakshmi’s (or Dhana’s) journey to being awarded the best female athlete at the National Inter-University Championships is nothing short of meteoric. Dhana, who stays in Tiruchirappalli, was a star kho-kho player for her university, Bharathidasan, until a year ago, when a coach spotted her unusually quick speed and took her under her wing to give her some sprinting training. A year later and the 20-year old is blasting past compatriots and won the 200m gold at the University Championships with a time of 23.24 seconds- the third best time in the country this year. The youngest of three daughters hailing from a family with no sporting pedigree, Dhana – who has never followed athletics or seen a race on TV-- is testament to the massive untapped talent and potential in India’s hinterlands. Having moved to the Inspire Institute of Sport to train under French Coach Antony Yaich, she now hopes to benefit from a structured training program and get even more faster as she looks to break national records and make a mark for the country at the world stage.
