Sustainability at JSW Steel

At JSW Steel, we pursue our business objectives ethically, transparently and with accountability to our stakeholders across the value chain. We are committed to promoting responsible behaviour and ensure social and environmental wellbeing.

We rely on the following areas to do our business responsibly:

  • A dynamic leadership
  • Adherence to core values
  • A well-articulated Enterprise Risk Management Framework
  • Practices that seek to sustain and enhance the long-term competitive advantage of JSW Steel with care for society and the environment

Protect and restore environment

We constantly try to learn about global and local issues, and have taken on the responsibility to address and tackle global long-term challenges such as demographic change, climate change, and diminishing resources in a socially, ecologically and economically responsible manner. Various policies, programmes, systems and initiatives are already in place.

We have developed a Policy on Conservation and Preservation of the Environment which also extends to the entire value chain. All the plants maintain the generation of emissions and waste within the permissible limits. There are no pending legal notices received from the CPCB or SPCB at any of JSW Steel’s operations.

Improvement in Safety Performance

In FY 2015-16, 11,178 employees at our plants, including associate employees were trained in various internal safety standards to inculcate good safety practices.

Engaging with key stakeholders

We firmly believe that business sustainability is possible only by taking along all stakeholders, internal as well as external. Interactions with around 300 internal and external stakeholders were held across all locations, including the corporate office during the year. The extensive exercise has been conducted to identify the material issues and the key stakeholder groups. This would be used to develop a framework leading to a sustainable business strategy. Risks and opportunities, related to respective functions, were compiled and analysed to develop a holistic insight into all aspects of the business.

Lost Time Injury
Frequency Rate (LTIFR)

Consequently, an LTIFR of 0.5 was achieved - an improvement of 9% and 49% over
FY 2014-15 and
FY 2013-14, respectively.

Developing Sustainable Products

The role of developing sustainable products to reduce the environmental and social impacts of the Company’s operations is gaining importance with each passing day. By incorporating environmental and social concerns into the product design philosophy, JSW Steel has developed certain products, which are not only unique, but also at the same time, are environmentally friendly.

We have taken a significant initiative by manufacturing customised products for passenger vehicles, thereby becoming a market leader. Previously, these products were imported due to the deficit of quality suppliers in India. This development promoted the following positive impacts:

  • Helped improve the local economy
  • Supported the Government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative
  • Avoided emission of greenhouse and other gases due to reduced import logistics
  • Ensured cost saving for customers
  • Enhanced passenger safety
