World Day for Safety and Health at Work

The International Labor Organization organizes the ‘World Day for Safety and Health at Work’ on the 28th of April every year and it is intended to bring attention to the emerging trends in the field of occupational safety and health and on the magnitude of work-related injuries, diseases and fatalities worldwide.

This year ILO wishes to highlight the topic of ‘Workplace Violence and Harassment’ as a significant and ongoing threat to worker health and safety, as well as to organizational productivity and reputation. ILO adopted the Violence and Harassment Convention and its accompanying Recommendation at the Centenary Conference in June 2019, calling for the prohibition and prevention of violence and harassment in the world of work.

JSW over the years has taken various steps to ensure no violence or harassment takes place in the workplace. JSW revised the Prevention Of Sexual Harassment (POSH) at Workplace Policy in 2018 to provide the employees with the confidence that JSW believes that Sexual Harassment at workplace is a grave offence. The policy states that the company holds the responsibility to identify and prevent Sexual Harassment and to develop a culture of "Zero Tolerance". This Policy is applicable across the company in all its workplace. The revision of the policy was an effort to create awareness on the subject, often considered a taboo and encourage a ‘speak up’ culture to receive help from the organization. JSW specially curated e-learning modules to maximize awareness and highlight various nuances of sexual harassment. Using the forum theater technique, the facilitators enacted scenarios and provided techniques to handle such situations effectively and raise concerns, as and when necessary. Keeping in line with same the Diversity and Inclusion Policy for JSW Steel was also unveiled in FY19. This policy aims to ensure that all those participating in its workplace are treated with respect, dignity and fairness, thus creating an environment which promotes positive working relationships.

JSW believes that there is no tool for development of women more effective than the empowerment and an empowered woman is a key to strengthening the economy. Following the same philosophy, JSW has helped rural women in the surrounding areas of Vijaynagar to form Self Help Groups (SHGs) by offering them a range of social and economic options, along with necessary support measures to enhance their capabilities, thereby empowering rural women socially and economically.

They are also being provided with a dignified employment opportunity by engaging them in BPO work. Women are also being trained in areas such as textile and apparel, and beauty therapy.

These efforts of JSW were rewarded when Avtar Group and Working Mother Media recognised JSW Group as a part of 100 Best Companies for Women in India (BCWI) 2018 for its vision and efforts to create and sustain a work environment where women can advance and thrive. Ensuring that the world of work is free from discrimination and violence is core for realizing decent work and should be adhered by everyone.
